Abstract
<PICT:0690473/III/1> The parent process is improved in that attrition of the heat carrier is minimized by discharging it from the reaction shaft through an open-ended conduit on to a conveyer, the conduit being supplied with a gas or vapour at sufficient pressure to prevent the escape through the conduit of gas generated in the reaction chamber. In the apparatus shown, the heat carrier passes from a heater 1 into a reactor 3 where it is contacted with a gaseous suspension of the catalyst or of the substance to be treated entering through a pipe 23. The heat carrier then passes down into zone 4 into which steam is blown by a fan 5. Part of the steam is recirculated to an evaporator 6, a part passes up into zone 3, and the remainder passes down with the heat carrier through an outlet conduit 14. The heat carrier flows from the open lower end of conduit 14 on to a conveyer belt 16, the flow being controlled by a weir 19 and by the belt speed. It then falls on to a screen 17 and passes into an elevator 18 for recirculation through the shaft. The steam used for sealing the conduit is withdrawn at 21 and may be used for preheating the catalyst or raw material to be treated.
