Abstract

<PICT:0909865/III/1> Apparatus for the continuous mixing of fluids including gases, liquids, and suspensions of solids in a gas or liquid, comprises a cylindrical chamber 1 with at one end a tangential inlet 2 and in its immediate vicinity a diametrical inlet 3, and at the other end an outlet 4. The diameter of the inlet 3 is greater than that of the inlet 2 and it may be slightly inclined towards the near end of the vessel. The outlet is preferably arranged directly above or below the inlet 3; the apparatus may be heated or cooled to maintain a reaction temperature. In the disposal of black liquor from the sodium sulphite pulping process the liquor (60% solids) dispersed in recycled gas at 600 DEG C. was fed through the diametrical inlet at 67,5 f.p.s. and air through the tangential inlet at 30 f.p.s. With a residence time of 15 secs. and maintained temperature of 640 DEG C., the components reacted to form combustible gas, sodium carbonate and sodium sulphate.ALSO:Apparatus for the continuous mixing of fluids including gases, liquids and suspensions of solids in a gas or liquid, comprises a cylindrical <PICT:0909865/IV (b)/1> chamber 1 with at one end a tangential inlet 2 and in its immediate vicinity a diametrical inlet 3, and at the other end an outlet 14. The diameter of the inlet 3 is greater than that of the inlet 2 and it may be slightly inclined towards the near end of the vessel. The outlet is preferably arranged directly above or below the inlet 3; the apparatus may be heated or cooled to maintain a reaction temperature. In the oxidation of acetaldehyde it was fed through the diametrical inlet at 66 f.p.s. (corresponding to 1774 lb./hour) and oxygen through the tangential inlet at 26 f.p.s. (corresponding to 126 lb./hour). The cylinder was maintained at 130 DEG C. and a vapour containing acetic acid, acetaldehyde, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide was withdrawn from the outlet.
