Abstract

1,004,244. Switching circuits. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 20, 1964 [Feb. 20, 1963], No. 6896/63. Heading H3T. [Also in Division H2] A " ringing choke " oscillator for supplying pulses to control the firing of a number of siliconcontrolled rectifiers 19, 20, 21 in an A.C. supply system comprises a transistor 41 having a primary winding 38 of a transformer 34 in its collector circuit, the transistor being non-conductive when the input signal to the base of the transistor from a signal source 52 is zero so that no pulses are developed in the secondary windings 31, 32, 33 of the transformer 34. When the signal from the source 52 changes to a negative value, the base of the transistor 41 becomes negative to the emitter and base current is drawn through a feed-back winding 39 on the transformer 34. As a consequence current begins to build up at a uniform rate in the collector circuit which includes the primary winding 38, the build-up being assisted by the induction between the windings 38, 39. When the emitter base conditions are such that the positive feed-back ceases the collector current falls rapidly so cutting off the transistor 41 and simultaneously inducing pulses in the secondary windings of the transformer 34. The frequency of these pulses is of the order of 2 kilocycles per second.
