Abstract
1,004,111. Packaging; boxes. M. BERGHGRACHT. Nov. 20, 1961 [Nov. 26, 1960], No. 41482/61. Headings B8C and B8P. The functioning of a machine for erecting, filling and closing a collapsed tubular carton 2 having a lining 1 is facilitated by the use of a carton having holes perforated in it through which suction means can act on the lining during the end closing operation. The carton may have the perforations 11 adjacent the top and bottom, Fig. 2, and a viewing aperture 32 if the lining is transparent. Apparatus for carrying the erected cartons past filling and closing means includes a pocket having an inner air permeable wall through which suction may be applied to the apertures 11 and thus to the lining and suction cups pivoted on two opposite sides of the pocket for folding outwards triangular liner corner tucks. The pocket may tilt to assist filling. In one form of apparatus, the collapsed cartons are fed from a magazine 6 through a passage 7 which opens them up. They are conveyed one by one by a reciprocating suction cup 8 to be dropped into a pocket 10 which carries the carton placed in it past guides 16 which flatten the upper end of the lining and fold one pair of end flaps 3, 4 outwardly, Fig. 4. Reciprocating jaws 17 heat seal the end of the lining and a device 18 folds in the flaps 3 to flatten the upwardly extending sealed portion of the lining, and while folding in the projecting portions 14 of the lining, applies adhesive to the flap 4 which is later folded down by a guide 20. The carton, having one end closed, is transferred to a conveyer 21 on which it is passed below a hot plate 22 which dries the glue, to one of a pair of V-shaped suction conveyer tubes 24 which invert the carton and place it at a position 25. The inverted cartons are forwarded in pairs to a measuring and charging device 26 and thence to vacuum sealing devices 27 and to devices similar to those previously described for closing the other end of the carton. The pocket 10, Fig. 9, comprises a double-walled member, the interior wall of which is perforated and suction is applied between the walls. The suction acts through perforations 11 in the carton wall to retain the lining in place while the closure flaps are folded down. The pocket has triangular suction cups pivoted on the upper edges of a pair of side walls, these cups engaging triangular portions 14 of the lining and when pivoted outwardly, folding these portions out as shown in Fig. 4. The carton may also be provided with closure flaps corresponding to these portions 14, in which case these flaps also have perforations in them. In a second form of apparatus (Fig. 12, not shown) a collapsed carton is erected and dropped into one of a series of pockets on a rotating turret, the pockets being similar in construction to the pocket 10 but being open at both top and bottom and having cups such as 13 at both ends. The carton is indexed to a station where the bottom closure flaps are opened and the lining is sealed at the lower end, thence to a station where the bottom closure flaps are closed and sealed. The cartons are filled and partially sealed at further stations. They leave the turret and are introduced in groups e.g. of five, into a vacuum sealing device from where they are transferred to a top flap closure device. A modified form of pocket (Fig. 15) has only three sides and an aperture 44 in one side allows a suction cup 8 to pass through it to erect a carton in the channel 7 and pull it into the pocket 43. The triangular portions 14 of the liner which are folded inwardly to lie between the flaps 3 and 4 may be partially cut off to form a pouring spout. The upper edge of one side panel of the carton may be recessed at 31, Fig. 7, to facilitate making an opening in the lining and pouring. Tongue and slot connections 33, 34 allow the top flaps to be re-closed.
