The shaft of a gyratory crusher is mounted for sliding movement relatively to a member capable of tiltable movement in the machine frame and is suspended from a jack unit disposed at or above the upper end of the shaft, the means connecting the shaft to the jack unit or the means by which the jack unit is supported on the machine frame being such that the shaft and tiltable member can tilt relatively to the machine frame with substantially no transverse stress being transmitted to the jack unit. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the jack 3, which is of hydraulic or hydraulicpneumatic type, is supported directly on the machine frame 4 and its piston 3<SP>1</SP> is connected to the gyratory shaft 5 by a rod 1 having ball- and-socket connectors 2, 8 at its ends ; the shaft 5 is slidable within a conical sleeve 6 which is capable of angular movement in a bush 7 disposed in the machine frame. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the gyratory shaft 11 is slidable within a conical sleeve 12 which is disposed for tiltable movement in a bush 13 and arranged to support the cylinder 19 of the jack unit, the piston rod 20 of which has a rigid connection with the shaft. The arrangement shown in Fig. 3 provides a shaft 25 which is slidable in a conical sleeve 26 movable in a bush 27 and extends upwardly through the piston 33 of the jack .unit ; the cylinder 34 of the jack is supported by the sleeve 26 and the shaft 25 is secured to the piston 33 by a locking device 36.
