Abstract

1,004,007. Rotary pumps. FERRY-DIAMOND ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 31, 1963 [Nov. 8, 1962], No. 42290/62. Heading F1F. In a rotary pump of the flexible vane type driven by an electric motor 2, Fig. 1, a separable sealing housing 14 is fitted in that end of the pump chamber 5 adjacent the motor. The housing 14 may be formed with a tongue 15, Fig. 3, to form a segment against which the vanes of the impeller 24 are deformed and is located in the pump chamber by a groove 17 and a pin 16 between the suction and delivery ports 12, 13. The housing 14 is fitted with a shaft seal 21 loaded by a spring 22 and an 0-ring 20. The spring 22 besides loading the shaft seal, on removal of the cover plate 25 urges the impeller 24 and the sealing housing 14 outwardly so that they can easily be removed from the pump chamber for cleaning, renewal or inspection. The segment 15 instead of being part of the seal housing 14 may be a separate removable part or be part of the cover plate 25. A groove cut around the pump chamber between the suction and delivery ports permits the by-passing of a small quantity of liquid to lubricate the pump during limited periods of dry running. Alternatively a nozzle with a restricted opening may be fitted in a flexible line between the ports externally of the pump body to recirculate the liquid during dry running periods and also avoid operating the pump against excessive pressure.
