Abstract

The lifting carriage of a masted lift truck is provided with an extension which projects away from the mast on the opposite side to the load support and which is engaged by means for applying a downward thrust to counteract the bending moment produced on the mast by the load on the load support. As shown, the load carriage 17 supports a platform 18, on which a turntable 21 provided with rails 22 for the load carrier 23 is mounted, and a frame 19, supporting the controls and an operator's seat 20. The carriage is movable on a mast 16, which slides within a fixed mast 15, and is connected to lugs 43, Fig. 2, on a pair of endless chains 37 passing round sprockets 36, 39 on the mast 16. Brackets 40 on the top cross member 41 of the fixed mast 15 are secured at 42 to the chains 37 so that, when the mast 16 is raised by an hydraulic ram 49 through chains 44, the chains 37 raise the carriage 17 at twice the speed of the mast 16. Chains 30 pass from the frame 19, round pulleys 31, 52 on the truck chassis, round pulleys 53 at the top of the fixed mast 15 and pulleys coaxial with the sprockets 39 at the base of the mast 16 to anchorages 55 at the top of the fixed mast 15. Thus the chains 30 are paid out at the same rate as that at which the carriage 17 rises and maintains a constant downward pull on the frame 19. The pulleys 31 are mounted on pivoted levers 61 and are urged downwardly by screws 62. In Provisional Application No. 16236/61 it is stated that the cables 30 may alternatively be connected to a winch drum driven by hydraulic means linked with the ram for extending the mast.
