Abstract

1,002,699. Coating webs. OXFORD PAPER CO. April 24, 1962, No. 15436/62. Heading D1L. In a "trailing blade" web coating apparatus of the type described in Specification 1,002, 698, the blade 23 is supported at an angle of between 40 degrees and 50 degrees with respect to the tangent plane to the backing roll 12 along the line of intersection of the plane of support with the surface of the roll and has an initial surface angle A of less than 40 degrees and a toe angle B of between 60 degrees and 90 degrees. The optimum value of the initial surface angle A is 29 degrees to 31 degrees. The blade, which is preferably of spring steel 0. 025 inches thick, has the surface 28, 30 which define the toe angle B, ground thereon from the toe 29<SP>1</SP> towards the rear of the blade. The heel of the working surface of the blade is preferably rounded to have a radius R between 0.006 and 0.008 inches or alternatively a flat bevel is ground on the heel. The working face 28 and adjacent surfaces are preferably chromium plated to a depth of 0. 003 to 0. 0030 inches.
