Abstract

1,002,611. Electric selective signalling systems. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Oct. 12, 1961 [Oct. 13, 1960], No. 35178/60. Heading G4H. [Also in Division G2] A compound grating having more than three gratings in which the number of lines on one grating differs from the next in series according to a binary law is used as the coding disc in a digitizer using moirÚ fringes. The grating 1, in the form of a disc having annular gratings is mounted on a rotatable shaft 6 and a further grating plate 7, divided into two C-shaped parts relatively displaced with respect to the axis of rotation of the disc 1, is mounted close to the disc 1. Two photo-electric cells 8 are aligned with each grating except the outermost which has only one and a light source 9 provides a parallel beam of light through the disc and the plate. The disc 1 is rotated in accordance with an input signal causing a variation in the light transmitted by the gratings and received by the photo-cells. A reflection grating may be used in which case the cells and the source are on the same side of the grating 1.
