Abstract
945,172. Electric selective signalling systems. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Jan. 20, 1961, No. 2328/61. Heading G4H. In a reflected-binary shaft encoder in which two discs are coupled by reduction gearing 5, Fig. 1 the highest order bit 58 from the low disc is only used to select lead/lag brushes on the high disc and the high disc is arranged so that its lowest bit 118 is identical to the said highest order bit 58 from the low disc. The encoder also uses the property that in a reflected-binary coded disc the two most significant tracks are identical apart from a phase shift of 90 degrees to produce the top two bits for each of the discs described from two 90 degree apart brushes 46, 56 and 153, 156 on the fourth track. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the tracks of the high disc are arranged in a similar fashion to the low order disc and are duplicated, one set being for lead brushes and one for lag brushes.
