Abstract

832,670. Binary to decimal code converters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. (Lorenz A.G., C.). June 16, 1958, No. 19173/58. Class 40 (1). An optical - indicating device adapted to convert binary values into their decimal equivalent has a number of slotted discs (such as the two shown in Fig. 3) having zones, each zone having a slot and a tooth arranged in either order, and the discs are each rotatable through a slot's width to two alternative positions, representing input binary values " 1" and "0" respectively, the arrangement being such that a passage through aligned slots appears in a position corresponding to the decimal equivalent. In the simple example of Fig. 3, the two discs are slotted as shown. In the first case a where both discs are in the " 0 " position there is a through passage in the " 0 " decimal position. In case b the top disc is in the " 1 " position and a through passage appears in the " 1 " decimal position. In case c the top disc is in the " 0 " position and the lower is in the " 1 " position so that a passage appears at decimal position " 2." In case d both discs are in the " 1 " position and the passage is in the decimal 3 position. The arrangement of slots and teeth may be in accordance with the plain binary code, as in this case, or with the cyclic permuting code. Fig. 2 shows a conversion arrangement for eight digit binary numbers, there being eight discs each movable to the left to assume the " 1 " position. A through passage appears at the corresponding decimal digit for example if the first and fourth disc are moved in slot's width to the left in response to the binary, number 00001001 a passage is made in the 9 position. As shown in Fig. 4, the discs are rotated to their " 1" positions by electromagnets acting on arms 3. Lamp 4 cooperates with a reflector to project light through the passage made by aligned slots in the discs. A scale 10 on the front bears corresponding decimal numbers.
