Abstract

1,039,607. Shaft encoders. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. April 11, 1963, No. 14553/63. Heading G4H. The angular position of a shaft is converted into a parallel digital signal combination by a plurality of pairs of photo-electric cells 4, Fig. 1 (not shown), each pair being associated with a rotatably mounted shutter 1 which, depending on its angular position obscures one or both of the associated photo cells or exposes them to light, the shutters being coupled to the input shaft through a gear train. In the form of Fig. 1 the shutters are cylindrical and cover members 3 carrying the photo cells 4. They are arranged in a circle about lamp 9 and each shutter is connected to the next by a gear having a ratio of two so that the outputs of the photo cells give a binary scale representation of the angular position of the input shaft. The outputs are applied to a logic circuit as described in Specification 1,008,200. In another form, Fig. 2a (not shown), the shutters are semi-circular and the associated photo cells are each accommodated in a bore 21.
