Headings B8C and B8H; A device for stacking raw bricks 21 in spaced relationship on a tunnel-kiln car (not shown), comprises a number of gripper assemblies 7 each having a pair of gripper arms 22 mounted on a respective beam 5 slidably mounted on a beam 5a and arranged so that the spacing between the beams 5 is adjusted during the transfer movement. Raw bricks 21 are fed in rows from a brick elevator 1 to a conveyer 2 and are held by a stop 4 so that they contact each other. The stop 4 actuates mechanism to bring a group of gripper assemblies 7 into position so that each pair of gripper arms 22, actuated by fluid pressure jacks 7b can grip the outer ends of each row of bricks. Intermediate tongues 23 extend on resilient rods 23a to space the bricks 21 from each other within the row and adjacent rows of bricks can be staggered by adjusting the limit stops 12 of the gripper arms 22, lengthwise movement of the bricks 21 being allowed by rods 23a flexing. During the transfer the individual gripper assemblies 7 are spread along beam 5a by fluid pressure jacks 9 drawing rods 10 through apertures 6 in beams 5, spaced stops 11 on the rods 10 drawing the beams. 5 apart. Different spacings may be achieved by different sets of stops 11 arranged angularly around the rods 10 (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). The whole group of gripper assemblies 7 may be rotated as a unit through 90 degrees about a vertical axis, in which case a stack as illustrated in (Fig. 5) may be built, alternate courses having the longitudinal axes of the bricks at right angles.
