Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A valve controlling the flow of liquid through an aperture 12 into a storage tank 10 and which closes when the liquid reaches a predetermined level comprises an actuating member 16 between a first space 17 in communication with the tank and a second space 18 communicating with a pipe 21 extending into the tank to the predetermined level, a one way valve 22 permitting fluid to flow from the second to the first space. The valve 12 is held in an open position by the pressure of liquid in the space 17 acting on the upper side of the member 16 until the liquid reaches the predetermined level and flows into the second space to act on the lower side of the member 16 and allow the valve to close. The one way valve may be situated in a passage of the valve body with its downstream side connected to the throat of a Venturi in the combined inlet and outlet 19. This arrangement prevents the valve from being held on its seat by pressure in the space 18 when a partly drained tank is to be filled. In a further modification, a vent 11 is replaced by a non-return valve in a downward extension of the pipe 21. A plunger 28 having a drain passage 29 for the space 18 enables the valve to be opened manually.
