Abstract

1,002,153. Band clips. THOMAS & BETTS CO. Aug. 22, 1961, No. 30250/61. Heading E2B. [Also in Division H2] A flexible tie strap, Fig. 1 (not shown), suitable for bundling cables has an eyelet portion at one end with a transversely disposed elongated aperture through which one thickness only of the other end of the strap can be passed, means being provided for securing the free end thereof against withdrawal. The strap may be made of plastics material such as nylon and it may be extended by a re-inforcing section 46, Figs. 3 and 4 or Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown) to a circular boss in which is a fixing aperture 50. An elongated body portion 20 has a flat side 22, a convex side 24 on which a pair of ribs 28 are formed, and rounded edges 26. Tail portion 30 is tapered and transverse ribs 32 are formed on its flat side. An eyelet portion 34 projects from the flat side of the body portion and has an aperture 36 which corresponds with the body portion cross-section. In the projecting part, a slot 40 is provided which is transverse to the aperture. In use, the strap is wrapped around a bundle of conductors C, Fig. 2, with the convex side 24 with the ribs 28 against them, the end of tail 30 is passed through aperture 36, gripped, pulled tight, secured against withdrawal and the free end then cut off unless the strap is required for re-use. A special hand tool of the pliers type may be applied for drawing the strap tight, punching out a tooth 42, Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 (not shown), deflecting into slot 40, and cutting off the free end. Other means which are described for securing the strap include twisting its free end through an angle so that it engages in slot 40, Fig. 6 (not shown) using a special tool described in U.S. Specification 3,047,945 or punching a V-tooth into slot 40, Figs. 9, 10 and 13 (not shown) or, with the kind of strap shown in Figs. 3 and 4, doubling the end back through dovetail 54 formed in the lower part of aperture 50, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown). Alternatively, a separate locking plate made of metal may be used to prevent withdrawal of the free end. One kind of locking plate 64, Fig. 14 (not shown) has two opposing teeth 66 through which the end may be passed but which bite into it if it is pulled back. A locking plate with an eye portion with a fixing aperture may be provided, Fig. 15 (not shown). Another form of locking plate, Fig. 16 (not shown) fits over eyelet portion 34 and has locking fingers which lie in slots 40.
