In an internal-combustion engine of the free-piston type comprising two compressor cylinders 11, 11<SP>1</SP> situated one at each end of the engine cylinder 4, a cylindrical engine casing wall is provided extending between opposed end walls of the compressor cylinders and coaxial with and radially spaced from the engine cylinder to define therewith an annular space, a number of radial partitions are supported by the engine cylinder so as to divide the annular space into a plurality of axially spaced chambers whereof one of them constitutes a scavenging air receiver communicating with the engine cylinder through the scavenging port thereof another chamber constitutes a compartment surrounding an exhaust conduit and a conduit is provided externally of the casing wall for conducting scavenging air from at least one of the two compressors to the scavenging air receiver all the other chambers with the exception of the compartment surrounding the exhaust conduit having communication with the surrounding atmosphere and an exhaust conduit is provided to extend from the exhaust port through the compartment which surrounds it. The casing is mounted so as to accommodate relative axial displacement between it and the engine cylinder under differential thermal expansion effects, means 71, 72 being provided for securing the casing assembly to the engine cylinder at substantially only a single axial position. Lubricators are indicated at 43 and 78. The fuel injector is indicated at 42. Cooling water is delivered into the end passages 24, 24<SP>1</SP> by the pipes 26, 26<SP>1</SP> and is discharged through the pipe 29. The cushion spaces are indicated at 10, 10<SP>1</SP>.
