Abstract

1,001,393. Cable and wire terminals. AMP Inc. Oct. 14, 1963, No. 40368/63. Heading H2E. A method of making an electrical connection between a ferrule and a conductor, comprises introducing a mixture of ingredients which react to form a setting resin at the interface between the conductor and the ferrule, and before the resin sets, crimping the ferrule about the conductor so that the mixture flows over the interface and then is squeezed out of the crimp, the mixture then setting to seal the connection. The ferrule 2, has a ring tongue extension 4, and is surrounded by a metal sleeve 6, surrounded by an insulating sleeve 8. Separate capsules, e.g. 16, of suitable monomer and hardener are held against the surface of the sleeve 8, by a plastic covering 18. Adjacent to the capsules is hole 10. During crimping the capsules are ruptured and their contents flow into the interior of ferrule 2 and wet the surface of the wire and internal surface of the ferrule, excess mixture is squeezed out of the joint, but any interstices within the crimp are filled with resin, and a continuous seal is formed at each end of the ferrule. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the ferrule is not surrounded by sleeves 6 and 8, but the inner surface of the ferrule has two internal annular grooves in which are mounted lengths of tubing containing the monomer and hardener. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the ferrule is surrounded by a metal sleeve and the monomer is coated on the inside of the ferrule and contained within a skin of cured resin. The hardener is contained in capsules themselves contained within the skin. A suitable monomer is an epoxy resin formed by the reaction of ethylene oxide or epichlorohydrin with a compound containing at least two hydroxyl groups, and the hardener may be an organic base, acid, anhydride or a compound containing active hydrogen atoms.
