Abstract

[Also in Division H3] In an arrangement for signalling selectively between a winding 1 and winding 6 or 7 on cores 4, 5, an anisotropic body 3 included in the magnetic circuit has such properties that a zone of high permeability can be moved across the body under the effect of an applied control field to complete the effective magnetic loop to either core 4 or core 5. The controlling flux is set up in a secondary loop around the body 3 and comprises a number of parallel magnetic loops whereby a number of discrete controlling fluxes may be obtained to move the zone into corresponding desired positions. The arrangement is stated to be applicable to moving the recording point transversely across a magnetic tape scanning for multi-channel tranmission, telephone switching and for use as a magnetic co-ordinate recorder. In the last named apparatus two contiguous zones may be arranged with their planes at right angles but it is stated that such a result can be obtained with two control fields applied to a single block. The anisotropic body may comprise a set of laminations insulated one from the other.
