Abstract

1,098,527. Transformers. SIEMENS A.G. April 2, 1965 [April 3, 1964], No. 14003/65. Heading H1T. A pulse transformer for use at temperatures approaching absolute zero at which metals become superconducting, comprises a core 1 which may be of superconducting material and which is provided with an outer magnetic layer, a primary winding 3 and a secondary winding 4. A cylinder 2 of superconducting material or provided with an outer layer of such material and having an inner magnetic layer surrounds the windings. Both magnetic layers have a direction of easy magnetization along the core axis. A constant magnetic field is provided perpendicular to this direction of easy magnetization either by D.C. carried by the core 1 or other auxiliary conductor or by a permanent magnet. The polarity of the secondary pulses can be reversed by reversing the D.C. in the core 1. In another embodiment (Fig. 2) the transformer is replaced by vapour deposited strip conductors and anisotropic magnetic films having a direction of easy magnetization perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the strips. The constant magnetic field at right-angles to this direction is provided by a coil, a permanent magnet, or by passing D.C. through the substrate or other auxiliary conductor strip at right angles to the primary strip. If the secondary strip is arranged with its longitudinal axis perpendicular to that of the primary strip a reversal of polarity of the secondary impulses is obtained by reversal of the constant magnetic field.
