Abstract
<PICT:1001134/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1001134/C6-C7/2> In a method of continuous casting the melt is caused by siphoning action to pass continuously through a chamber which is maintained at reduced pressure to effect degasification and from there directly to the casting mould, the melt being heated during its passage through the mould by induction or direct resistance heating. As illustrated in Fig. 1, melt received in container 2 is siphoned through container 3 and discharged directly into mould 6, a vacuum pump being connected to the container through pipe 10. Degassing may be aided by injecting an inert gas below the surface of the melt. Heating is effected by means of yoke 9 and primary winding 8, the secondary circuit being completed by conductive rod 11. In the modification of Fig. 2 the melt is directly heated by current supplied through graphite electrodes forming the pipes 14 and 15, the discharge pipe 14 having a nozzle 13 of insulating material to produce a smooth jet. Alternatively current may be supplied through casting mould 6. The "pinch effect" resulting from the flow of electric current may be used to control the rate of flow of the metal.
