844,757. Continuous - casting machines. STEIGERWALD, K. H. July 16, 1956 [Feb. 29, 1956], No. 21890/56. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XIII] A method of increasing the rate of heat-transfer between a heated surface and a liquid separated from the surface by a vapour-film formed during heat-exchange between the surface and the liquid, comprises applying an electric voltage between the liquid and heated surface, such as to produce an electrical discharge through the vapour-film. In a continuous casting process, a casting 80 to be cooled is in close contact with the wall of a mould 81. A ring of refractory insulating material 83 is press-fitted into mould 81, and carries a spray-nozzle from which water is ejected on to the surface of casting 80, the resulting steam being evacuated through openings 84 in the member 83. The voltage generator 86 is connected between the nozzle 82 and mould 81, or the casting 80. It is stated that a magnetic field may be provided in or near the electric discharge zone. The current used may be alternating or direct, and a highfrequency current may be employed. The heated surface may be flat or cylindrical, smooth or roughened, and may be plated. The preferred liquid is water, but other liquids may be used if they are electrically conductive or made conductive by admixtures. The Specification indicates also that the hot surface may be formed by the boundary of a solid, gas, vapour or liquid.
