Abstract

1,000,997. Hinges; stays. F. T. PRODUCTS Ltd. Jan. 9, 1963 [Jan. 17, 1962], No. 1772/62. Heading E2F. A locking hinge or stay comprises a pair of members 11, 12 (Fig. 1, 6) pivotally connected by a pivot pin 13 and provied with overlying surfaces 14, 15 formed with slots 16, 17, and a double-ended pawl 18 having its thickness accommodated partly in one slot and partly in the other, the pawl being displaceable within the slots but being yieldingly constrained to maintain its instantaneous orientation relative to the members, and the slots being so shaped that when the members are opened to the fullest extent permitted by the pawl and then slightly closed the pawl locks them in the position shown in Fig. 6, and when they are again opened fully the pawl is released so that they can be fully closed. During each opening and closing cycle, which is described in detail in the Specification, the pawl rotates through 180 degrees. The pivot pin 13 fits tightly in an aperture 15a in the member 12 and passes freely through an aperture 14a in the member 11, and at each end it is provided with an annular groove so that it engages tightly in bores 21, 22 in a pair of caps 19, 20 made from resilient material. The caps bear frictionally against the opposite sides of the pawl to provide the yieldable constraint; in a modification they comprise spring steel discs with separate synthetic plastic covers. The invention may be applied to a telescopic locking stay (Figs. 13, 15) comprising a member 72 slidable in a C-section member 71. The pawl 75 is located in a slot 73 in the member 71 and a recess 74 in the member 72, the yieldable constraint being provided by a spring cover plate 76 sprung over the member 71. Fig. 13 shows the stay in the position corresponding to Fig. 6, the members having been fully extended and then slightly retracted to be locked by the pawl. The yieldable constraint may be provided by magnetic attraction between the pawl and a suitable surface.
