Abstract
1,000,777. Storing radio-active material. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 8, 1963 [July 6, 1962], No. 26926/63. Heading G6C. Apparatus for transferring an irradiated fuel element from a position within a flask (not shown) standing above a waterfilled concrete tank 1 on the flange 8 of a metal plug 7 to a position in a vertical compartment 14 of one of a number of racks 14 secured to the tank floor, comprises a bracket 17 carrying a tube 21 rotatably supporting a column 24 resting at its lower end on a bearing 26 on the tank floor, the column being rotatable by a handle 38 on a shaft 35. A carrier arm 27 keyed to the column 24 is vertically movable relatively thereto by an endless chain runing round a pulley 32 at the foot of the column and around a pulley 34 driven by a hand wheel 36 through the shaft 35, the arm 27 being interposed in the chain and connected to it at 29, 30. The operator is carried by a gantry 40 movable over the top of the tank 1 by a hand wheel 44. In a transfer operation, the fuel element 48 is lowered from the flask as disclosed in Specification 993,372 into a passageway 9 in the plug 7 and thence into a recess 39 at the free end of the arm 27, this recess having been previously aligned with the passageway and raised adjacent its lower end by operating the handle 38 and hand wheel 36. The arm 27 is then moved to its lower position (shown in chain-lines) and rotated so that the fuel element 48 may be grasped by tongs 47 at the lower end of a pole 46 and placed in one of the compartments 14.
