Abstract
968, 002. Fuelling reactors. SULZER FRERES S. A. Dec. 12, 1961 [Dec. 21, 1960], No. 44511/61. Heading G6C. Apparatus for loading and unloading a reactor with fuel elements which are secured by their upper ends in the reactor core, is situated beneath the core and comprises a water-filled tank 4 supported by rollers 3 on a travelling gantry 2, the tank containing an hydraulically-operated telescopic elevator 6 having a fuel element gripper 16 at its upper end. In use, the tank 4 is moved to the required position beneath the reactor and the elevator 6 is raised to engage the fuel element. Mechanism (not shown) releases the fuel element from the core whereafter the element may be lowered by the elevator into the tank and the tank transported by the gantry 2 to a point where the fuel element is transferred to a conveyor. In another construction (Figs. 2-4, not shown) the gripper comprises spring-loaded balls which engage a recess in the fuel element casing and is carried by a nut guided for vertical movement in the tank and operated by a vertical threaded shaft driven by an electric motor. In a further construction (Figs. 5-8, not shown) the gripper is vertically movable by a chain-driven mechanism situated within the tank and the latter is pivotably mounted between its ends so that it may be tilted to facilitate removal therefrom of the fuel element, In this construction the apparatus is carried by an eccentrically mounted rotatable cover at the bottom of the reactor chamber.
