Abstract
In a process for the production of b -carotene a culture of + and - forms of Blakeslea trispora is fermented in the presence of a 2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexane derivative in which the 1-carbon atom is doubly bonded to oxygen or nitrogen. 0.1 to 10 gms. per litre of the cyclohexane derivative may be added after the fermentation has proceeded for 1 to 3 days, and the fermentation continued for a further 6 to 10 days. In examples 2,2,6 - trimethylcyclohexanone and the semicarbazone of 2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexanone are used; other derivatives mentioned are the oxime, hydrazone, thiosemicarbazone and imines of 2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexanone. The culture medium includes corn seed hydrolysate, soya bean oil, cotton seed oil, distiller's solubles, corn starch, yeast extract, potassium monophosphate, carboxymethylcellulose, thiamine hydrochloride, N,N1-diphenylparaphenylenediamine, dimethylformamide, manganese sulphate monohydrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-6-ethoxy-1, 2-dihydroquinoline.
