Abstract

A paving composition comprises a major proportion of a mineral aggregate bonded with 1-10% of a binder comprising one or more linear polyolefines or resins made by polymerizing unsaturated hydrocarbons from the steam cracking of naphtha or a blend of such polyolefines and resins, together with a polyethylene of molecular weight of 15,000-35,000 and a petroleum hydrocarbon oil of Saybolt Universal viscosity at 210 DEG F. of 30-400, an API gravity of 10-40 degrees and a Cleveland Open Cup flash point of 300-600 DEG F. The binder may contain 35-75% of polyolefine or resin which may have a Ring and Ball softening point of 125-230 DEG F., a molecular weight of 1000-1500, a S.G. of 0.96-0.98 and a C : H ratio of 6-7 : 1, together with 2-35% of the polyethylene and 5-60% of the oil. The mineral aggregate may be sand, limestone, silica, clay, stone, gravel or slag.
