Abstract

It comprises two elements assembled together, namely a diaphyseal rod 1 and an epiphyseal body 2 of variable height. The upper part of the rod 1 is provided with an off-set collar 11 carrying a conical adaptor 16 indented to engage in a complementary bore 23 of the body 2, in order to assemble the latter with the rod. The outer edge 22 of the body and the generatrix 13 of the rod are aligned. The body comprises an oblique stud 21 intended to support the artificial femoral head 3.

Description

The present invention relates to an improved total hip prosthesis.

It is known that as a result of various lesions, it is sometimes necessary to replace the natural femoral head with a prosthesis which cooperates either with the patient's natural acetabulum, or with an artificial acetabulum.

In the case of resumption of old loosened prosthesis, the upper part of the femur is absorbed. As the considered part of the prosthesis will be in contact with the resorbed part of the femurs, a longer prosthesis must be provided since its seat is lower than the original one.

Depending on the individual, the size of the medullary canal of the femur is different, so that the implant must have variable diameters of the femoral shaft.

To be able to cover all the prostheses required by surgical indications, it is necessary to have a large set of models with variable femoral barrel diameters and different heights, which requires a considerable stock leading to very immobilization. important fund
the improvements which are the subject of the present invention aim to remedy these drawbacks and to allow the production of the femoral part of a hip prosthesis which is produced in two parts to allow covering all the surgical cases which may arise , without having to have a large stock of equipment.

To this end, the femoral part according to the invention is composed of two assembled elements, namely a diaphyseal rod and an epiphyseal body of variable height, means being provided for securing these two elements longitudinally and angularly, while said body comprises the usual femoral spherical head.

The two elements are joined by means of a morse cane assembly, while a lug of the rod penetrates into a hole in the body to constitute the angular blocking of the two elements considered.

The geometric axis of the male end of the diaphyseal rod which is used to assemble the epiphyseal body is at a constant distance from the external generatrix of said rod which is aligned with the corresponding face of the diaphyseal body, this axis being offset inwardly from that of said rod.

The appended drawing, given by way of example, will allow a better understanding of the invention, the characteristics which it presents and the advantages which it is capable of providing.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the femoral part of a hip prosthesis established in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is an exploded view with parts broken away.

Fig. 3 est une coupe suivant III-III (fig. 2). Fig. 3 is a section along III-III (fig. 2).

Illustrated in fig. 1 the femoral part of a hip prosthesis established in accordance with the invention and comprising two elements, namely a diaphyseal rod 1 and an epiphyseal body 2. The diaphyseal rod 1 is intended to be engaged in the medullary canal of the femur extending in the shaft of the latter, while the epiphyseal body 2 protrudes beyond the distal section to carry a conical pin 21 intended to receive the sphere forming the prosthesis of the femoral head and which has been referenced 3 in fig. 2. Of course, this sphere could be directly part of the body 2.

The end of the diaphyseal rod 1 is slightly cut in the shape of a point to facilitate its introduction into the medullary canal, while its opposite end is expanded to form a flange 11 joined to said rod by a significant leave 12. It can be observed that the the collar is offset laterally relative to the rod 1, one of its ends being flush with the external generator 13 of the said rod. The face of the flange 11 opposite the rod 1 is planar and from this face stands on the one hand a conical end piece 14, on the other hand a lug 15. The end piece 14 has a geometric axis slightly offset towards the inside with respect to the geometrical axis of the rod 1 so that it is possible, whatever the diameter of the latter, to have interchangeability of the body 2. It is noted that the center of the end piece 14 has a threaded hole 16.

The diaphyseal body 2 has in profile in plan a shape similar to that of the flange 11 of the diaphyseal rod 1 (fig. 3), that is to say that the external generator 22 of the face of this body being at the opposite of the pin 21 is in alignment with the generator 14 of the rod 1. Under these conditions, whatever the epiphyseal body 2 and the length of its pin 21, the generator 22 of the latter is always in alignment with the generator 13 of the rod 1, even when variations in the diameter of the latter are noted. In this way, the outer part of the epiphyseal body 2, represented by its face containing the generatrix 22, cannot abut on the greater trochanter, so that it can be preserved in its entirety, which is not not the case in many common prostheses.

The diaphyseal body 2 has a conical central bore 23 whose slope is to twist 50, so that the assembly of the end piece 16 and this bore is wedging when the end piece is engaged in the bore. In order to perfectly determine the orientation of the pin 21 relative to the rod 1, provision is made to provide a hole in the body 24 into which the lug 15 of the rod 1 engages, when the body is assembled to this last.

We also note that the bottom of the blind bore 23 has an opening 25 through which a screw 4 which engages in the threaded hole 16 so as to ensure security of the assembly of the epiphyseal body and the diaphyseal rod.

Thanks to the presence of the leave 12 which provides the connection between the collar and the rod 2, a seat is obtained whose thicknesses are sufficient with regard to the constraints to which the rod 1 is subjected.

Finally, the diaphyseal body 2 is also provided with two holes 26 and 27 which make it possible to pass #the wires intended to optionally re-attach the trochanters when necessary.

It should also be understood that the foregoing description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention from which one would not depart by replacing the execution details described by all other equivalents.
