Abstract

  The present invention relates to a display frame for

glasses and the like.

  Discloses display frames for glasses and similar articles consisting of two horizontal walls whose length is greater than a multiple of the diameter of the articles contained and two vertical walls whose height corresponds to the height of the article contained, the two horizontal walls comprising means of retaining articles. These frames are made from a strip of cardboard or foldable material, the ends of which are joined together to form a frame or surround. Flaps comprising the means for retaining the articles are articulated on the parts of the strip constituting the horizontal walls and after folding and fixing ensure that the articles are held in place. The patents US-A-4,037,721 and US-A-3,931,888 describe such sleeves intended to receive two rows of articles. Frames for a single row of items also exist and are designed in a similar structure from a strip of

  cardboard, as will be described below.

  Such a frame structure requires the use of a blank of relatively large surface area and its shaping is

  hardly performed on automatic machines.

  In order to overcome these drawbacks, the invention provides a display frame of the type mentioned above, but made from a blank of a foldable material, which is cut and folded in the form of a tray and the central panel of which constitutes the wall. bottom has a window forming an opening on a

large part of the surface.

  The panel forming the bottom wall has first and second flaps adjoining two opposite sides of the central panel constituting the side walls of the frame and third and fourth flaps adjoining the other two opposite sides of the panel, these third and fourth flaps comprising means retaining articles as well as fixing lugs used to fix the third and fourth flaps inside the first

and second flaps.

  The narrow flap terminating the retaining panels is applied against the uncut portion of the bottom wall, the retention in place being ensured by fixing lugs which are fixed in notches made in the fixing tabs of the third and fourth flaps on the first and

second flaps.

  In a second embodiment, only one of the retaining panels extends the outer edge of one of the flaps, the other panel being cut out from the bottom wall. This is of course only possible when the height of the articles allows it. Other features and advantages will become apparent from the

  Figure 1 schematically shows a blank of the prior art. It consists of a strip of pliable material, generally cardboard, of generally elongated rectangular shape divided into four main panels 101 to 104 by

  transverse fold lines. The panels 101 and 103 will form the vertical side walls of the frame and the panels 102 and 104 will form the horizontal walls when the blank is put in the form of a sleeve by gluing the tab 113, articulated on the end of the panel 101, on the outer edge of the panel 104. The retaining means are formed of flaps articulated on the panels 102 and 104 and divided into three parts (105, 108; 106, 109; 107, 110) by longitudinal fold lines. The part or 108 adjoining the panel 102 or 104 comprises cutouts 111 and 112, in number corresponding to the number of articles to be packaged, in this case three on the blank shown, the shape of which is adapted to the article to be maintained. The product shown is intended for cylindrical objects, for example

  cups with practically similar bottoms and drinks.

  In the case of stemware, the cutouts intended to receive the

  foot, for example the cutouts 111, will be of different shape.

  The cutouts 111 and 112 are articulated on the fold line between the panel 102 and the flap 105 and the panel -104 and the flap 108, so that when the parts 106, 107 and 108, 110, after folding around the lines of longitudinal folds are folded towards the panel 102, 104, they form, in the position of use, a triangular cutting support. The articles by pressing on the cutouts bring them inside this support and are then held in place. Each panel 101 to 104 comprises an articulated flap at 104a, along a fold line, intended to be folded against the corresponding main panel to strengthen and stiffen it. This flap can also be used to hide the unfinished side of the cardboard blank, in which case the flaps will have a symmetrical shape to that of the panels.

  The display frame according to the present invention is prepared from a blank of totally different design and FIG. 2 represents the flat surface of a first mode of

realization of the invention.

  The blank 1, which is made of a foldable material, for example cardboard, comprises a panel 2 largely hollowed out by a window 3 leaving only a frame of limited dimensions. In general, this panel will be rectangular and the articles will be placed parallel to its short sides which will form the vertical side walls of the display frame (in the case of a single article of height greater than the diameter, the vertical walls will be formed by the long sides ; in the case of two articles, one could have a square panel according to the dimensional height / diameter ratio of the articles); still other cases

  are possible, but the description will be made considering

  the short sides of the frame are vertical and the long sides horizontal, changes to be made otherwise

being obvious.

  The short sides of the central panel each have a fold line 8,10 to which is articulated a flap 4,5 of generally rectangular shape intended to form the vertical side walls of the frame. The outer edge opposite the fold line of each flap is advantageously curved concave

  so as to identify the profile of the articles.

  On the long sides of the central panel 2, hinges 9 and 12 are hinged on flaps 6 and 7 which form the horizontal walls of the frame and the means for retaining the articles. To form the frame, the flaps 6 and 7 have on each of their lateral edges a fixing lug 17, 18, 19, 20 articulated on a fold line. The outer contour of this tab is provided to conform to the curved outer edge of the side walls inside which the tabs will be fixed (preferably by gluing). Each of these legs has a notch 27 forming a recess, the opening of which is directed towards the corresponding flap 4 or 5.   16.26. Cut-outs hinged on fold lines 15 and 16 constitute the means for retaining the articles; in Figure 2, the flap 6 is provided to form the horizontal wall above the frame and the cutouts 13a, 13b, 13c are circular or elliptical to accommodate the drinkers of glasses, while the flap 7 includes cutouts 14a, 14b and 14c in alignment with the cutouts 13a to 13c, of circular shape in their first part, then in a segment whose tip is replaced by an arc of a circle in opposite directions, so as to leave on the movable part of the panel advances whose the central part is curved concave, the feet of the glasses coming to wedge against this central part. The flaps 6 and 7 end in a narrow flap 23, 24 separated from the cuts 13 and 14 by a fold line 25, 26. The cut part of the flaps bears on each of its lateral edges, near the fold line 25, 26 of the narrow flap, a tongue 28, 29, 30, 31 articulated on the flap along a fold line. When the blank will be folded into a tray and the fixing lugs 17, 18, 19 and 20 will be glued to the internal face of the flaps 4 and 5, and the retaining elements of the articles will be folded towards the inside of the frame , the tabs will slide into the notches 27 of the fixing lugs, holding the retaining elements in place and applying the narrow flaps 23 and 24 against the bottom panel, in the vicinity of window 3. The cut-out portion of the flaps, of which the width is slightly greater than the distance between the fold lines 9 and 15 and 12 and 16 is then in an oblique position and when the articles are inserted into the frame, they exert pressure on the cutouts 13 and 14 in

  applying them to the horizontal wall.

  Figure 3 shows the blank of Figure 2 during the first formatting phase. The side flaps 4 and 5 are folded at 90 as well as the flaps 6 and 7 and then the

  fixing lugs 17 to 20 on the internal face of the flaps 4 and 5.

  The volume of the frame is made by folding the flaps 6 and 7 around the lines 15, 25 and 16, 26 and introduction of the tabs 28 to 31 in the notches 27, which locks the flaps 6 and 7 in

  position. If desired, one can consider gluing the narrow flaps 23 and 24 against the central panel, but this is not

  essential for maintaining the frame according to Figure 2.

  FIG. 4 represents the finished display frame in which two stemware were introduced, the third place having been left empty to show the cutouts 11c and 13c applied to the horizontal walls. This figure also shows the narrow flaps 23 and 24 applied to the central panel, their outer edge being placed flush with the longitudinal edges of the

  window 3 cut out from panel 2.

  Modifications can of course be made to the blank shown in FIG. 2 and two variants in particular

  of interest will be described in more detail below.

  FIG. 5 represents the flat section of a blank 40 according to the invention which is particularly advantageous when using cardboard or a foldable material having a finish only on one of its sides (therefore of lower cost). Reference numbers

  identical to those in FIG. 2 designate identical parts.

  The general structure of the blank is similar to that of the blank in Figure 2, but differs from it by the cutout of the central panel. Window 3 does not have a frame on its four sides but two longitudinal strips 42a and 42b on the horizontal sides while its cutouts 43a and 43b form flaps which will be folded down on the central part of the internal face of the flaps 4 and 5 respectively , the internal edge (before mounting) of the flaps 43a and 43b being curved symmetrically with the curvature of the edge

outer flaps 4 and 5.

  The shaping, the setting in volume and the filling of the

  display frame are made as for the blank of figure 2.

  FIG. 6 represents the flat press of a blank 50

  according to another embodiment of the invention.

  In this variant, only one of the means for retaining the articles is constituted by a panel extending the flap forming the horizontal wall. In FIG. 6, it is the means for retaining the drinkers of the glasses which is thus constituted, but it is absolutely obvious that the reverse is possible. This means of restraint

  is identical in all respects to the means described previously.

  On the other hand, the horizontal bottom wall or base of the display frame is constituted by a flap 57 articulated by a

  fold line 58 on the large lower side of the central panel.

  This flap 57 comprises two fixing lugs 59 and 60 similar in their function to the lugs 19 and 20 of the flap 7 of the blanks of FIGS. 2 and 5 do not have notches 27. The means for retaining the feet of the glasses are not formed by a panel extending the flap on its outer edge, but by a shutter cut in the central panel, thereby forming a window. Of course, such a design is only possible if the diameter / height ratio of the glasses allows it. The shutter thus cut leaves at the upper part a fixed panel 52, possibly curved on the lines of connection to the flaps 4 and 5, so that the corners of the shutter are rounded. This component consists of a fixed panel 51, articulated along the fold line 58 and on which is articulated along the fold line 54 an extension in which the cutouts 53a to 53c are made (here of the same shape as the cutouts for glass legs in Figures 2 and 5, the lateral and upper edges of the extension being free). The cutouts 53a to 53c are articulated on a fold line 55 delimiting a narrow flap 56 which, after folding the flap along the line 58, folding the cut part along the line 54 and folding the narrow flap along line 55 will apply to the upper part (leftmost part in FIG. 6) of the flap 57 and will be fixed there, for example by gluing or stapling. It is not possible in this variant to provide fixing tongues of the type of tongues 28 to 30 and that is why the notches 27 do not exist in the fixing lugs 59 and 60. The volume setting, the shaping and filling are carried out in a manner similar to that used for the blanks of Figures 2 and 5. Such a structure allows savings

substantial cardboard.

  The packaging forming display frames of the present invention, as described in the previous embodiments or as they can be modified without

  depart from the scope of the claims present inter alia the

  following advantages: - The articles presented can be seen almost entirely

  (open front and rear sides, curved side walls).

  - The drinkers of the articles are partially cleared, which makes it possible to judge their thickness or their finesse by a

simple look.

  - Items can be removed from their packaging for examination by the potential buyer and returned to them without deterioration of the

frame.

  - The packaging is produced automatically, the blank is placed in volume in universal machines ("tray tray"), the shaping of the means for retaining the articles is also done mechanically, as well as the introduction of the articles

in the packaging.

  - Items can be labeled once placed, which eliminates positioning problems in the packaging

  of previously labeled articles.

  Such display frames are available in many materials, cardboard or plastic, suitable for cutting and

  folding as well as printing of all types.

  As has already been mentioned, it is obvious that this display frame makes it possible to present any number of articles, although

  that the example of realization was described for 3 articles only-

  by modifying the length of the horizontal walls accordingly-

  tales which should be slightly greater than x times the diameter of the

x items to be packaged.

  In addition, such display frames are particularly suitable for

  rement well to modular assemblies, each frame constituting a module, joined by gluing, belting, wrapping, shrinking film, etc. It is thus possible to bring together n modules of x items for storage, transport and even sale .
