Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the manufacture of stationery, and more particularly a composite article of the binder or folder type, as well as a method for its manufacture.
Various stationery articles are known, and in particular binders or folders made of plastic materials such as PVC. I1 is in common use, to avoid breaking the PVC to thin the lines intended for folding by grooving the sheets with cold or hot pressed metal nets. There is thus the possibility of operating a few folds which are however not suitable for articles intended for multiple folds
We have therefore developed methods which envisage doubling the parts intended to be folded by hinges made of flexible plastic which weld to rigid plastic - at the same time as the rigid is thinned. rigid quickly breaks up, leaving an unsightly break and causing the flexible plastic to rupture.
The object of the invention is to obtain total independence of the flexible plastic which makes it possible to benefit from all its qualities, and provides a practically unlimited possibility of folding.
The subject of the invention is therefore a stationery article of the binder or folder type, comprising rigid sheets or plates, as well as sheets of flexible plastic, capable of supporting a large number of folds without harming the solidity of the article.
The invention also relates to an improved process, making it possible to manufacture stationery items of the above type, under excellent conditions and at a low cost.
The invention is particularly intended for the manufacture of files and filing articles for school, office and advertising. Preferred embodiments which can be used depending on the height of the documents to be inserted and the thickness of the rigid plastic are described below for information and not limitation.
The stationery type file or folder, according to the invention is of the kind comprising at least two rigid plates hinged together and having a continuous surface, and is distinguished in that the rigid plates are separated from one 'other by an interval of about 1 to 5 mm and preferably 1.5 to 3 mm, and are welded or glued to at least one sheet of flexible plastic material covering all or part of the rigid plates.
Thus the rigidity of the binder is ensured by the rigid plates constituting the cover and, if necessary, the back while the flexible sheet, made tightly secured to the rigid plates, ensures the possibility of folding the elements in all directions, without risk of tear, due to the flexibility and resistance of the chosen material.
According to the manufacturing method according to the invention, a plate of rigid material is cut with dimensions slightly greater than those of the assembly formed by the definitive juxtaposed plates, at least one transverse strip of width between 1 is cut from this plate. and 5mm and preferably between 1.5 and 3mm stopping at a distance from the edge greater than about 5mm, this plate is applied to a flexible plastic sheet of width at least equal to the length of the cut transverse strip, and welds the rigid plate to the flexible plastic sheet, cutting at the same time the assembly at a distance from the edge sufficient to obtain elements of the rigid plate separated by the precut transverse strip.
According to a variant of the method of the invention, provision is made for placing a second rigid plate identical to the first, on the flexible plastic sheet, before the final welding and cutting operation.
A file or folder is thus obtained comprising at least two rigid plates, and generally a narrow plate constituting the back of the file, situated between two larger plates together forming the cover, separated by an interval of 1 to 5 mm approximately, and joined between them by the flexible plastic sheet.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the flexible plastic sheet covers the entire surface of the rigid plates.
Although it is not an obligation, it is advantageous that the flexible plastic sheet is sandwiched between rigid plates assembled in pairs, when a thick cover is desired.
The rigid plates are made of any material having an appropriate rigidity, for example PVC. Their thickness can vary from 200 microns to approximately 2mm. Various materials can be used, their choice being guided by their strength and rigidity properties, and the possibility of joining them to the flexible plastic sheet by thermal or high frequency welding or ultrasonic or by bonding.
The flexible plastic sheet can be made of known materials such as PVC which can easily be welded to rigid plates having the desired properties of flexibility and tear resistance. Their thickness is generally between 100 and 500 microns.

As shown in Figure 1, the filing cabinet is made from two rigid plates (1) and (2) made of PVC 400 microns thick, separated from each other by an interval of about 3mm, and applied on a flexible plastic sheet (3) in PVC 200 microns thick. At the separation between the rigid plates (1) and (2), corresponding to the position provided for the fold of the filing cabinet, the edges of the rigid plates are welded to the flexible plastic (3) by means of an electrode (4) high frequency overlapping the interval between the two rigid plates. Welding has the effect of somewhat reducing the width of the gap between the rigid plates.
Figures 2 and 3 show a variant of the device of Figure 1 where the welding is carried out by means of a double electrode (5) of which each branch (6) and (7) welds the edges of the rigid plates (1) and (2) respectively, on the flexible plastic sheet (3). An insulating strip (8), for example made of Teflon, makes it possible to limit the widening of the rigid plastic, and consequently the narrowing of the gap, during welding. The electrode can also have two bevelled branches (9) and (10) as shown in FIG. 3.
When the thickness of the rigid plastic must be greater than 400 microns, it may be preferable to split the rigid plates, as shown in Figure 4. The binder then includes a flexible plastic sheet (3) sandwiched between the rigid plates (1) and ((2) and (2 '), (11) and (11'), separated from each other by an interval of approximately 3mm. The thickness of each rigid plate is in this case 300 microns while that of the flexible sheet (3) is about 200 microns. The welding is carried out as above, but using a double electrode welding front and back.
Of course, the other edges of the rigid plates are also welded to the flexible plastic sheet in the same way.
Ces découpes transversales s'arrêtent à environ lcm du bord de la feuille (12).FIG. 5 shows the implementation of the method of the invention. A rigid plate (12) has cutouts (13) and (14) whose width is approximately 3mm. These transverse cuts stop at about 1 cm from the edge of the sheet (12).
The rigid plate (12) is applied to the flexible sheet (33, the dimensions being identical.
We then proceed to weld the rigid plate with the flexible plastic sheet on the edges of the cutouts (13) and (14) by proceeding as above. At the same time, by means of a cutting blade electrode, the assembly consisting of the rigid plate (12) and the flexible sheet (3) is welded and cut 1.2 cm from the longitudinal edges along the lines (15) and (16) shown in Figure 5, and about 5mm from the side edges, in the desired format.
