Abstract

1389283 Bookbinding; covers; scoring RESEARCH ASSOCIATION FOR THE PAPER & BOARD PRINTING & PACKAGING INDUSTRIES 21 June 1973 [21 March 1972] 13117/72 Headings B6A B6E and B6J To improve the flexibility of a hinged joint formed in a plastics book or file cover by cutting an elongate notch therein, the floor of the notch is stretched by pressing the plastics defining the floor outwardly from the notch to raise a ridge on the other side of the cover. The cover may be of polypropylene, the notch being terminated short of the edges of the cover to prevent tearing. A release agent may be applied in strips adjacent the hinges to prevent the spine of a filler adhering to the backboards of the cover when it is applied to the spine of the cover. An apparatus for producing the hinge comprises a traversable block 11 mounting a cutter 12 for cutting a "V"-shaped notch and a former 13 for pressing the floor of the notch into a groove 16 in a base-plate 17. The former 13 may be cooled or may be a roller having a cylindrical ridge.
