Abstract

New garments such as trousers, jackets, etc. are given a faded, worn appearance by tumbling in water in a rotating drum which is clad internally with abrasive elements. The cladding pref. comprises blocks of sandstone, or millstones, which are bolted to the inner surface of the drum, or set in a layer of cement. Alternatively, the process may be carried out in a stationary vat constructed of concrete whose inner surface has an abrasive texture. The vat has a lid in which is mounted an impeller which agitates the garments in water within the vat. In comparison with the use of loose stones within the drum, this process is much cleaner, and prevents rapid wear of the machine itself. It does not provoke rapid disintegration of the stone blocks, thus preventing formation of a sludge which would soil the garments and seize up the machine bearings, etc.
