Abstract

The mixer comprises a pumping circuit which recycles material from the top surface of the fermentation and reinjects it at the base of the vessel. The pump suction pipe inlet is below the centre of the natural surface level inside the vessel so that a vortex depression is formed when pumping commences. Pref. reinjection into a vertical cylindrical vessel takes place horizontally at right angles to a radial space pipe. Parallel inflow jets combine to rotate the material about the vertical axis of the vessel and thus accentuate the vortex effect produced above the suction pipe inlet. The vortex swirling action of the sludge prevents surface crust formation and ensures homogenity. As reaction is speeded up, smaller appts. can be used, which is esp. helpful for fermenting agricultural/food waste with a high percentage of dry matter.

; CONCEPT OF CONTINUOUS ANAEPBIA FERMENTATION ACCEWRATION EVIT1T ANY FDRMhTIONT OF CROTTE t
The present invention relates to a process for brewing the materials contained in an anaerobic digester in order to reduce the retention time and avoid any crust formation resulting from fermentation.

The mixing of the materials contained in the digesters has so far been carried out only in order to avoid or reduce any crust formation. Indeed, in any continuous fermentation it is necessary to work with high percentages of humidity, 88.90, 94%. The low percentage of dry matter contained by these fluids tends to agglomerate on the surface under the effect of floating, and at this time forms a very compact crust that can reach several meters in height.

This route therefore represents one of the essential drawbacks of any continuous anaerobic fermentation process. Various techniques are currently used to avoid this crust formation.

The Achères station uses in particular the insufflation of the gas produced by fermentation, under pressure, at the base of the digester. The rising gas bubbles then come to ensure the mixing of the material while coming to burst the surface, thus preventing the formation of crust. It should be noted that the residual sludge from the Achères station rarely exceeds 8% of dry matter
Other users, on a much smaller scale, use n4, namely worm screw mixing with the material taken at the bottom of the digester and surface watering; or, always on a smaller scale, using surface stirring arms, ensuring by rotation the formation of crust.

Another technique consists in brewing all the material in digesters of longitudinal shape.

It results from all these techniques, a non crust formation, and one can realize that when it comes to very important digesters of the type
Achères, it is impossible to be able to use mechanical mixing. Indeed the size of the tanks itself prohibits this kind of process whether by arm or worm. your efforts required mechanics would not be bearable.

If you want to exploit agro-food waste on a large scale, you quickly realize that it is essential to work with large digesters given the waste available on a very short radius.

For transport reasons, and due to the quality of the current residues, it is necessary to very significantly increase the percentage of dry matter, which therefore prohibits the use of the gas blowing process, as well as any mechanical mixing.

In order to avoid the construction of monstrous digesters it therefore becomes necessary to speed up the fermentation process. Outside the colonies of bacteria ensuring the fermentation of the materials live agglomerated around the particles of carbonaceous materials rising to the surface.

The present invention therefore aims 10 - to accelerate the fermentation process by resumption on the surface of dry matter and bacteria agglomerated around the latter, and their reinection at the base of the digester, which will have the effect of reactivating these bacteria and allow a better fermentation of the material, therefore reducing the retention time 2 - sucking the material at a level below the level of the material contained in the digester will create a vortex effect which will be amplified by the rotation of the basket in digestion; this rotation being itself obtained by reinjection of the material at the base of the digester parallel to the walls with a blade effect; all suction and reinjection being provided by pumping (high flow pumps).

The whole of this process also allows a ton of homogenization of the material avoiding any stratification.
