Abstract

The outdoor light fitting for illuminating large public areas is adaptable so that the lamp units may be fitted together in several different ways. Lamps are housed in a rectangular box with convex upper and lower surfaces. A lamp unit is supported by being attached to a cubic hub, which in turn may be mounted on top of a lamp standard. Inside the hub there is a clamp fitting intended to grip the top of the standard, or alternatively to grip a horizontal extension to the standard. In order to give extra light a number of fittings may be fastened together - either end to end or side to side. The lamp units may also be mounted vertically to shed light sideways in a chosen direction.

Description

 The present invention relates to improvements in luminaires intended, in particular, for public lighting.

 In terms of public lighting, it is sometimes-necessary to vary the light power installed according to the nature of the spaces to be lit.This requirement leads manufacturers to study different models of luminaires, the dimensions of which depend on the light power required or to study supports allowing the grouping of several luminaires.

 We know that each luminaire has means for fixing it to the end of a mast. When adopting the solution consisting in grouping several luminaires, it was generally necessary to modify the aforementioned means to adapt them to the support created for grouping.

 The present invention, which overcomes these drawbacks, is remarkable by the use of a nut, comprising means for fixing it to the usual mast and supporting one or more luminaires, the body of each luminaire having lateral surfaces allowing them to be fix to each other without continuity.

 Referring to the drawing, it can be seen that the body 1 of the luminaire has a substantially prismatic shape and has surfaces 1a, 1b laterally allowing the grouping of two bodies by joining them by said surfaces.

 Any means can be used to carry out the assembly.

 Preferably, locations, having a small thickness, will be provided during the molding of the body.

By knocking down these parts, it will then be possible to create orifices for the passage of either cables or fixing screws. Generally, this is a known technique which, for this reason, is not shown in the drawings.

 To fix the body 1 on a mast M, a fixing nut 2 is used in which the mast penetrates, or the support which is to receive the reflector, by means of an orifice 3 provided on one of its faces, said nut with internal clamp 4.

The face 5 comprising the orifice 3 may consist of a removable plate (Figure 2).

 Bes other faces of this nut can be fixed against one of the side surfaces of the body 1 by any appropriate means, for example, using screws and bolts (not shown) passing through the respective walls of the bodies in contact.

 According to one embodiment, the surfaces la are flat while those lb are cylindrical. One of the surfaces 1b is convex while the other is concave.

 Preferably, the nut 2 is fixed against the concave end lb of the body 1 and, therefore, its five fixing faces other than that 5 above are convex.

 For a judicious choice of the fixing face, it is therefore possible to orient the mast inlet orifice 3 and, consequently, to choose the position of the body relative to the mast M or to a stock C.

 It appears from the drawing and in particular from figures 1,3,4, 5 and 7 that the same fixing member, namely the nut 2, makes it possible to maintain one or more luminaires on the same mast.

 In the drawing, it has been assumed that the thickness of the nut 2 is less than the width of the body 1, but, of course, the reverse is possible, in particular with a view to fixing four luminaires on the same mast in a cross.

 it should be noted that this method of grouping the luminaires makes it possible to consider the light sources as a single source whose power would be equal to the sum of those of the sources.

 In this way, all the calculations for determining the characteristics of an installation are simplified, which was not the case when using luminaires placed on separate supports because the distance separating the light sources had to be taken into account.

Claims (3)

 1-Improvements to the luninaries, characterized in that the body (1) of the luminaire has surfaces on the outside (la and lb) allowing them to be assembled to each other without any solution of continuity.  2-Improvements to the luminaires according to claim 1, characterized in that the fixing of the body of the luminaire on a usual support, mast (M) or stick (C) of candelabrum, is carried out by means of a nut (2) capable of be fixed against one of the aforementioned surfaces, by any known means.  3-Improvements to luminaires, according to claim 2, characterized in that the nut (2) has a prismatic shape, five faces of which constitute means of attachment to the body of the luminaires and the sixth is fixed to the support, said nut comprising, at this effect, internally a fixing means-such as a clamp (4).
