Abstract

The fuel flow control for a carburettor has a constant head device (1) in the fuel line (2) between the tank and the carburettor (7) and a return flow line (4) for excess fuel. The device ensures an adequate fuel supply in all states of demand. The fuel is introduced into the constant head at the bottom (1) with the line to the carburettor float chamber (7) set a little higher. The overflow duct (4) is set highest of all to ensure a constant pressure head to the float chamber. The top of the device has a venting line (6) and a protective filter (5) and valve.

Description

Fuel return line between carburetor and tank for cars with petrol engine and with loaé fuel tank at the rear.

All attempts made to lower the consumption of car engines which are supplied with fuel by means of a circulation pump from the tank housed at the rear, by manipulations on the carburetors of these engines, have been rem. i.ses in question by the following problem.

The pump flow is proportional to the speed of rotation of the crankshaft. However, for the same speed of rotation, the requirements are very variable (for example between the speed in cdte or i1. Acceleration and the speed in descent and in braking).

Theoretically, the float and its needle provide a fuel supply that meets the needs. But since the driving conditions of the pump must be fixed so that it delivers enough fuel for the maximum possible demand, the float and its needle cannot be opposed to the effects of the overpressure of the circulation pump when needs decrease.

It is to correct this that the invention was conceived, an example of application of which is described below.

1). Near the carburetor, conveniently in front of the constant level tank in the front-rear direction of the vehicle, is an additional tank in the form, in the present application example, of a cylinder 1 standing vertically, having a bottom fixed and a removable cover 5 (fig. 1).

In this tank end, near the bottom, the pipe 2 coming from the circulation pump, a little higher than it the pipe 3 towards the tank at constant level 7 and, even higher, a pipe 4 of larger diameter than the previous one which returns; ". through the bodywork to the upper side of the fuel tank located at the rear of the vehicle.

The fuel level is constantly maintained a few millimeters above the lower edge of the return line orifice 4. It must be high enough so that in the event of high consumption it will establish a sufficient additional inflow between the cylinder 1 and the tank at constant level 7 and so that in the event of low consumption, there is no drop pressure capable of overcoming the back pressure of the float.

Two concomitant undesirable phenomena are to be eliminated with the device described.

It is absolutely necessary to provide a ventilation opening in the cover 5 of the cylinder 1. In the absence of this, it may happen under certain conditions that all of the fuel pumped into the cylinder is sucked through the return line. 4 and that the constant level tank 7 receives nothing.

When the tank is full, its contents are bowed forward or backward, in the event of sudden braking or sudden acceleration, with sufficient intensity for it to establish a strong pressure against the upper wall of the tank, that is to say against the entry of the return line 4. The action of the latter is reversed and the influx which then occurs on both sides is that the fuel escapes through the ventilation hole provided in the cover 5 of the cylinder and springs inside the car.

We manage to eliminate these phenomena by having, both below the ventilation opening 6 provided in the cover 5 of the cylinder qutau-dessolls of the inlet opening of the return pipe 4 in the upper wall of the tank, valves which allow a directed flow from top to bottom, but prohibit uu flow from bottom to top.

As an exemplary embodiment, FIG. 2 shows a bottom view of the valve 8 - 14, FIG. 3 a side view and FIG. 4 a sectional view corresponding to this side view, the floating plate 13 of light metal, shown in FIG. 5, having been omitted from all these figures.

Each of the two valves consists of a circular plate 8 which is fixed to the center of a plate 9 of larger diameter, located above it. The latter is used for fixing below the upper wall of the tank or below the cover 5 of the cylinder 1. On the valve plate 8 is fixed down a short tubular piece 10 of the same diameter. The fixing plate 9 has in the center a hole which corresponds to the internal diameter of the pipe which terminates therein respectively. The hole in the valve plate 8 has a diameter increased by the thickness of an O-ring 11 which must be placed there and it is slightly grooved.

At the necessary distance from the lower end of the tubular part 10, a groove is hollowed out for a retaining ring or a retaining ring 12 made of spring steel wire.

Between the latter and the plane of the O-ring moves a circular plate 13, relatively light, provided with four lugs 14 which keep it at a distance, upwards and downwards according to the direction of flow of the fluid controlled by the valve.
