Abstract

The fuel injection pump of an internal combustion engine has two main inlet ports and a secondary inlet port. As the piston moves upwards it begins to deliver fuel as soon as the piston covers the port. After a small quantity of fuel has been delivered, the groove is aligned with the port which is connected to a low pressure source of fuel. Thus no more fuel is delivered to the engine until the edge covers the port (14) when delivery to the engine recommences.
