Abstract

A farm mixer of the type which is mounted at the outer end of a cantilever jib pivotally attached to a tractor. The mixer comprises a power driven rotor for mixing, milling and homogenising a viscous suspension, e.g. fluid compost, in a pit. The rotor is now supported in an open framework at the end of the jib. The rotor now takes the form of a single start helix extending axially for not less than three quarters of a complete pitch, pref. for at least a complete pitch. At the inner end of the rotor the helix is cut radially towards its axis, forming a cutting blade with radial edge. A counter blade is fixed to the framework to provide shearing action as the rotor turns. Drive to the rotor is transmitted from the tractor which also has power cylinder(s) to raise and lower the mixing jib. The rotor drive from the tractor is pref. via a universal joint with torque limiter. Tractor mounting eliminates manhandling the mixer. The mixer cuts up solids in suspension, e.g. straw, so that the suspension can be easily pumped and spread, partic. as fertiliser on fields.
