Abstract

The fuel consumed by a motor vehicle is measured during road use by the generation of electrical pulses whose frequency is proportional to the fuel used. A calculator provides the rate of use from distance travelled. A membrane type pump (4), which is unaffected by gas bubbles in the fuel, pumps fuel to an auxiliary tank (6) containing a degassing filter and float (8). A proximity sensor (9) detects the float position to control the pump. A pipe (11) from the base of the tank a constant level tank (13) via a pump (12) and volumetric counter (14). A float (29) and proximity sensor (30) control an electrovalve (32) which opens to the atmosphere. A level sensor (20) is connected to a servo (36) to control the pump to maintain the level constant while the counter output is processed to determine fuel used.
