Abstract

The mixt. of compost and impurities is advanced down an inclined plane which delivers the mixt. to fall through a transverse air stream. Differential inertia is used to separate the mixt. into three zones, one contg. compost, one contg. a heavier fraction, partic. metal cans etc., and a third contg. a lighter fraction including plastic cardboard and paper fragments. The heavier fraction is deflected only slightly by the air stream, compost rather more and the lighter fraction much more. The compost pref. falls through a convex screen beneath the air stream. Sepn. may take place in an inclined, rotary screening drum. Compost is delivered via the drum screen, the heavier fraction is carried through the drum to its lower end and an air stream blows the lighter fraction out of the higher end of the drum. Used for removing non-degradable impurities from freshly made compost derived from unsorted household rubbish. Very simple, inexpensive system of sorting tin cans, glass, plastic, paper etc. from aerobic compost is provided.
