Abstract

A carbamide-furan resin is prepd. by reacting a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde resin with urea at 50-85 degrees C and reacting the obtd. resin (100 pts. wt.). with furyl alcohol (20-200 pts. wt.) at 50-85 degrees C and pH 7.2-8.9 while simultaneously dehydrating it under reduced press. The resin is useful as a binder in the prodn. of foundry cores, esp. without heating. It has stable properties for >3 months and can be cured rapidly at relatively low temps. Small amts. of gas are evolved during foundry casting. Cores with high mechanical strength and good gas permeability can be prepd. and rapidly sepd. after casting. The core sand may be used repeatedly after removal of the resin.
