Abstract
The flat conical charge for an explosive shell has a metal lined cavity on the end facing the target. The projectile ensures high penetration efficiency while maintaining the advantages of the flat hollow charge properties. The hollow cavity is lined with an alloy containing sufficient tantalum to ensure a density higher than that of the copper. The alloy may contain tungsten, molybdenum or niobium. The thickness of the lining decreases from the cone base towards the apex. The penetration depth of the thermal spike formed depends on the density of the lining material. Pure tantalum yields best results, but economy can be achieved by suitable compromises.
