Abstract
An alkaline earth metal (alloy) powder or a powder mixt. of an alkaline earth metal with one of its halides is introduced into the bath. A medium is formed contact with the bath surface which does not react with the alkaline earth metal phosphides formed in the bath. Phosphorus is removed from the steel bath without loss of alloying elements or other additives. The process can be carried out after a desulphurisation process, without intermediate deslagging, if the desulphurisation stage is prolonged to reduce the activity of oxides in the slag.
