Abstract

Cellule d'affichage électro-optique passif constituée par une couche d'un mélange de cristal liquide nématique à anisotropie diélectrique positive, d'un composé optiquement actif et de molécules dichroïques. Les faces internes des plaques de la cellule sont recouvertes de couches d'alignement telles que, dans l'aire située en dehors des zones d'affichage (segments), la couche du mélange a une structure homéotrope dans toute son épaisseur. Au droit des segments la cellule est agencée de façon que la couche du mélange a une structure hélicoïdale de sorte que la lumière incidente est absorbée dans ces zones lorsque celles-ci ne sont pas activées, et que la couche du mélange s'oriente selon une structure homéotrope sous l'action d'un champ électrique. Ainsi, lorsque la cellule est au repos, tous ses segments sont visibles, l'affichage s'effectuant en << effaçant >> les segments qui ne doivent pas apparaître, seuls les segments non activés demeurant visibles en sombre sur fond clair.
