Abstract

In order to reduce exhaust gas pollution of an internal combustion engine, a sensor on the exhaust manifold, detects the composition of the gases and then transmits a signal to the carburettor which adjusts the ratio of the fuel to air. In a V engine the need to fit a sensor to both exhaust manifolds is eliminated by controlling the mixture supplied to the second bank to be 1.02 times as rich as that supplied to the first bank. An additional supply of air is also used with an additional converter in the exhaust pipe.
