Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase an efficiency of purifying exhaust gas by dividing cylinders of a multicylinder internal combustion engine into two groups, one with which a rich air fuel mixture is supplied and the other with which a lean air fuel mixture is supplied, and alternately supplying a purifying case which is disposed at the rear end of an exhaust manifold and contains ternary catalyst, with rich and lean exhaust gases.
CONSTITUTION: Cylinders are divided into two groups 3, 8, one with which a rich air fuel mixture produced in the first carburetor 5 is supplied and the other with which a lean air fuel mixture produced in the second carburetor 10 is supplied. Resultant rich and lean exhaust gases meet at the rear end of an exhaust mainfold 11 and alternately flow through a ternary catalyst 12. As purification effect is enhanced and an air fuel ratio of a mixture becomes near a theoretical ratio, fuel can be saved.
