Abstract

The engine cooling water circuit has a pump with a thermostatically controlled bypass. When the engine is cold, this diverts part of the water through an exchanger in which it is heated by the exhaust gas. When the engine reaches normal running temperature, the bypass closes and water is circulated without any heat exchange. As the temperature rises further, the thermostatic control opens shutters which allow air to flow past a radiator through which the water is circulated. At a still higher temperature an electrically operated fan is switched on to increase the flow of cooling air over the radiator.
