Abstract

A spark plug electrode is made by locating a core of thermally conductive metal co-axially in the box of a tubular outer metal sheath. The sheath is worked down on the core. The core is removed from a region at one end of the sheath and the sheath is melted where core is removed to cause it to seal over the end of the core. The electrode runs cooler and has longer life. The use of additional brazing materials and fillers are avoided. The core may be of Cu, Al or alloys based on these. The outer sheath is of Ni, Ni-based alloy, Mo, stainless steel, refractory metal or metal alloy. The sheath may be worked by swaging or drawing the core and sheath through a die. The melting may be carried out in air or partial vacuum with high energy beam or laser.
