Abstract
1,039,909. Making soldering iron bits. HEXACON ELECTRIC CO. June 5, 1963, No. 22378/63. Headings B3A and B3R. A soldering iron bit for electric soldering irons comprises a copper or other high conductivity metal rod enclosed in a compressed tube or stainless steel or other oxidation resistant metal. A stainless steel tube 12, Fig. 3 (not shown), is telescoped over a slightly smaller copper rod 11 and the assembly is drawn through a die to compress the tube tightly on to the rod with an intermetallic bond therebetween. The drawn assembly is cut into lengths and at the forward end of each length the stainless steel is stripped away and the copper end is pointed &c. at 14, Fig. 4 (not shown). The portion 13 is then electroplated with iron 15 and a plated coating 16, Fig. 7, of metal not wettable by tin or solder, e.g. chromium, is provided over the whole tip except for the pointed end.
