Abstract

571,122. Brazing. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Doe. 23, 1943, No. 21522. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In a method of brazing, one of the parts is oxidized and the parts assembled so that the space between them is greater than a capillary opening, brazing metal is then positioned on or adjacent the parts which are then heated in a reducing atmosphere to a temperature high enough to reduce the oxide and melt the brazing metal. It is stated that when the oxide is reduced a spongy surface with capillary openings is produced in which the molten metal flows. The spacing between the surfaces may be about 0.01". A tungsten rod may be brazed in an opening in a nickel body by oxidizing the rod by heating in an oxidizing flame, removing the oxide by brushing from the part not to be brazed and inserting the coated portion in the nickel body. A ring of copper is positioned at the mouth of the opening-and heating effected .in a hydrogen atmosphere to reduce the oxide and melt the copper. Steel may also be similarly brazed with copper as the brazing metal. Steel may be similarly coated with silver and brazed to another metal.
