Abstract

A motorised agitator unit for gasifying, partic. aerating, a liq. The unit comprises a tubular column with a motor at the top coupled to a shaft extended through the column to rotate an immersed, turbine impeller just below the bottom of the column. The impeller has radial blades to draw air down the column passage from inlets above the surface of the liq. The impeller has also corresp. tangential blades to diffuse air into, and simultaneously agitate, the liq. The shaft is pref. carried in one bearing above the surface of the liq. and a second, water-lubricated bearing at the lower end, both bearings being fixed inside the tubular column. Alternatively, the turbine impeller shaft can be rigidly coupled to the motor shaft. The bottom of the column is pref. fitted with an external, annular flange to form a horizontal diffuser disc to guide air bubbles out from the impeller. Process is particularly for the aeration of polluted effluent to promote biological purificn. by oxidation. Also, and frequently simultaneoulsy, process is for degreasing a liq. by aeration which produces bubbles for flotation sepn. of grease globules.
