Abstract
Mechanical aerator for liq. requiring aerobic conditions to support biological activity is of the type using a vertical, immersed chimney through which liq. is drawn up to be scattered across the liq. surface by a turbine rotor at the top of the chimney. The turbine rotor drive shaft is extended coaxially down into the chimney where it is fitted with a rotary, axial impeller which forces liq. up the chimney and projects it against the underside of the turbine rotor. The top of the chimney pref. projects above the surface level of the liq. and is spaced clear of the underside of the turbine rotor which is fitted with radial blades. The lower end of the chimney is pref. pipe vented to atmos. or piped to a supply of compressed air. Provides agitation to enrich a liq. in oxygen, esp. the aeration of water for fish-breeding and aeration to promote the development of bacteria in activated sludge processes.
